Finding a cabin that takes dogs is easy around Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Finding things to do with your dog in the national park is harder, because the park allows leashed dogs on only two trails: the Gatlinburg Trail and the Oconaluftee River Trail.
Dogs are not allowed on most Great Smoky Mountains trails, including the popular waterfall hikes. If hiking is the main goal, plan for someone to stay with the dog or book a local pet sitter.
What to look for in a pet-friendly cabin
- The pet fee, and whether it is per pet or per stay.
- Weight and number limits. Many cabins cap at one or two dogs under a set weight.
- A fenced yard or enclosed deck. Rare on mountain lots, so filter for it if your dog needs it.
- Stairs and deck railings. Multi-level cabins can be hard on older dogs.

The Gatlinburg Trail
The Gatlinburg Trail is the best dog walk in the area: it follows the river from the edge of town toward the Sugarlands Visitor Center, so you can start it without a long drive. It is one of only two park trails where leashed dogs are permitted, per the National Park Service.
Other tips
- Never leave a dog in a car at a trailhead or attraction lot, even in cool weather.
- Bring a crate. Many hosts require dogs to be crated when left alone.
- Ask the host about local vets and the nearest emergency clinic.
