Gatlinburg is a small mountain town wrapped around the edge of the national park. Pigeon Forge, a short drive north on the Parkway, is the entertainment strip: Dollywood, dinner theaters, go-karts and outlet shopping. Both have thousands of cabins in the hills around them.

Price

The difference is smaller than people expect. AirROI's rental data puts the average nightly rate at about $385 in Gatlinburg and $368 in Pigeon Forge. What changes the total more is the season: December and October weekends cost far more than February in either town. See the cheapest months.

Walkability

Downtown Gatlinburg is compact enough to park once and walk to restaurants, the aquarium, the SkyLift and the Ober Mountain tram. Pigeon Forge is spread along a multi-lane Parkway, so you will drive or use the trolley between most stops.

Getting into the national park

From Gatlinburg you can be inside the park in minutes. From Pigeon Forge you drive through Gatlinburg to reach the main entrance, which adds time on busy days. Either way, budget for a park parking tag if you plan to stop and hike.

Getting to Dollywood

Dollywood is in Pigeon Forge. If you plan two or more park days, staying in Pigeon Forge saves you the Parkway drive from Gatlinburg each morning and evening, which is the single biggest time sink on a holiday-season trip. Our guide to cabins near Dollywood covers the best areas.

Can you split the trip?

Yes, and for a long week it can work well: three nights in Gatlinburg for the park, then two in Pigeon Forge for Dollywood. Just check the cleaning fee on each booking first, because two short stays can cost more than one long one.
